Fungal infection of the toenail is a common complaint that causes thick, brittle toenails. The infected toenail may be crumbling, yellow, tender, or even painful to the touch. Fungal nail infections can be caused or aggravated by several things, including nail injuries, tight or restrictive shoes, prescription medications, and general ill health. Here are 3 natural cures for fungal nail infections.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil contains anti-fungal properties to kill the fungus that causes nail infections. Tea tree oil also contains antibacterial properties to help prevent the spread of infection. For mild fungal infections, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil to a bowl of warm water and soak your feet for 20 minutes once a day. For more persistent infections, apply 2-3 drops of neat tea tree oil to the affected area twice a day.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains properties to destroy the fungus responsible for nail infections. For mild fungal infections, soak your feet once a day in a mixture of one part apple cider vinegar to one part warm water. For more serious infections, soak a cotton wool ball in apple cider vinegar, and then apply it as a compress to the affected area. Cover the cotton wool ball with a piece of gauze and hold in place with surgical tape.
Aloe vera contains antifungal, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. As well as killing the fungus that causes infection, aloe vera can help to prevent the spread of infection and soothe any related discomfort. Clean the area 2-3 times a day using a cotton wool ball soaked in aloe vera juice. Before going to bed at night, apply a layer of aloe vera gel to the affected area and cover with gauze.
